 What do you think stray dogs need most? Introduction When I first went to India, I was struck by the sheer number of stray dogs and cats. Many had coats so matted that they were covered in mud and grime, some had injuries they'd been fighting for weeks, and others were simply lethargic from fleas and malnutrition. So when I think about what these animals most need, my first thought is food. If a dog or cat is hungry enough, it will be able to find food anywhere—and it might even get lucky enough to find a kindhearted person willing to feed them. But their second-most pressing need? Medical attention. Malnourished animals are often sickly as well—but those with curable illnesses will never recover if they don't receive care. The third thing stray dogs need? A home!
