The Do's and Don'ts of Feeding your Labrador Retriever

The Do's and Don'ts of Feeding your Labrador Retriever

Your Labrador Retriever’s diet matters as much to the health of your dog as it does to the pleasure of your pup. Learn how to feed your Labrador Retriever properly in order to keep them happy, healthy and slim by following these do's and don'ts of feeding your Lab.

What Kinds of Food Should I Give My Lab?

Pets are living creatures with unique diets just like humans. Ensuring that you feed your Labrador retriever properly can help him/her live a long, healthy life. There is a general rule to follow:

-Young Labs need more protein, omega 3, phosphorus and calcium in their food than adult Labs. Make sure to consult the Lab mix guidelines when buying dog food so you know how much they should eat per day. -Avoid foods that have corn in them as much as possible - the oil inside will most likely build up around the liver creating fatty deposits which can cause health problems later on in life.

What Times Should I Feed my Dog?

As a pet parent, you want to know when is the best time to feed my dog? Dogs are creatures of habit, so feeding on the same schedule every day can help you establish yourself as pack leader.

Generally, most dogs should be fed twice a day - in the morning and evening - but if you're busy at work or have erratic work hours, then we recommend giving them about 2 cups/day in a divided amount for optimal nutrition. As well as knowing when is the best time to feed my dog, it's important to know what not to feed them.

We love our pets dearly - but that doesn't mean we should share all our food with them!

Can My Dog Eat Too Much?

Dog treats are a controversial subject. Not only is it important to make sure they're not too large in size, but you also want to make sure they don't have any sugar, artificial flavors or preservatives in them. However, there are some dog treats that are healthy for your Lab! Be careful not to give them anything with garlic or onion as an ingredient since it could cause an allergic reaction. Here's a list of their favorite healthy snacks:

-Cooked white rice (1/4 cup) Cut into pieces

-Cooked brown rice (1/4 cup) Cut into pieces

-Carrots peeled & cut into small bitesized pieces

-Broccoli florets trimmed off the stalk

What Kinds of Treats Should I Give My Dog?

Most dogs love to chow down on these treats, but it may not be a good idea. If you want to treat your pup, we recommend doing so only after they eat their meal or, if they're really hungry, feeding them some human food like meatballs or yogurt. You should never feed the same treats to both dogs in the house since many foods are unhealthy for other animals. That includes chocolate! And finally, avoid anything with onions and garlic as those can lead to stomach upset.

What If My Lab Gets Sick From Eating Something He/She Shouldn’t Have?

If your lab consumes a toxic substance, it can cause damage to his stomach and lead to vomiting, diarrhea, or even death. The first thing you should do is get him to the vet right away. Dogs often seem unaffected at first but will show signs of distress within 24 hours such as lethargy, lack of appetite, or refusal to eat or drink. If the dog shows these symptoms, see the vet immediately - even if he doesn’t look like he has consumed anything harmful!

What Kind of Water Does my Dog Need To Drink?

Water is an essential nutrient for all living creatures. In fact, a dog that does not drink enough water can develop a life-threatening condition called Dehydration, which can be fatal. As such, it is important to make sure that you are supplying your Labrador with plenty of clean drinking water throughout the day (and night!). But how do you know if they're getting enough? Here are some ways to tell:

-Dry skin (likely due to dry air from AC)

-Lack of appetite (often paired with excessive thirst)
